Maeje came to Betwixt for an alliance,
Not through trickery, nor forced compliance.
Her brain is a database
Of all things earth and space,
What you call magic, she simply calls science.
Who is Maeje?
Maeje is originally from another region - Scientia. Scientia is a space station light years from Betwixt. You could say Scientia is a satellite hood of Betwixt.
Maeje was very happy in Scientia. In fact, she was considered one of its most intelligent residents. Scientia has its own hoods that study different disciplines. Entomology, where they study insects. Ichthyology is all fish this and fish that. Herpetology is all about reptiles, amphibians, and everything that slithers. Volcanology, where any resident can erupt at a moment’s notice. And Glaciology, where everything is just ice-ing on the cake.
The only problem was: every hood thought their area of science was the coolest. They weren’t interested in what was going on in other hoods. Maeje had spent her entire existence interested in all sciences. She spent years learning about the weather with the meteorologists. Learning about every beat of the heart from the cardiologists. And her years with the petrologists? They rocked.
She wanted to teach others all the cool and interesting aspects of science. She had devoted herself to Scientia’s motto: Question everything. Assume nothing.
So, one day, she built her own space shuttle. It was a huge endeavor, but she knew she was up to the task. She had spent over 100 years consulting engineers, scientists, doctors, and even writers. Now was the time to put all that scientific knowledge to the test.
She traveled through space. She studied the effects of weightlessness. She studied motion sickness while in space. She charted the stars.
She finally landed in Betwixt, where she gets the chance to teach her new friends about the wonders of science. And she’ll soon realize that she’s got a lot to learn about herself.
For the big kids
Maeje is a character, not a diagnosis. Maeje is not about science any more than a kid is about their hair color. Please introduce them as a neighbor.

Field notes
You could have met Maeje before anyone else
But you don't have to miss out on all the new residents and new hood construction.
Gossip loves keeping everyone up to date on what's happening. If you sign up for the field notes, she'd be happy to sit on the porch with you once a month.
She promises to write only once a month to start. She'd write more often, but we only have so much tea to spill.
